Hello all
What are yalls opinion on the E36 M3 as a drivers car. I have found a supposedly bone stock M3 in my area, I love the look of the bone stock M3 coupe. The one I found looks exactly like the one in the picture. I’m inquiring about the condition right now, its going for 7k.
Thanks!

There are at least two people on here who have them, if memory serves.

Mostly this.
Also, is it an European M3 or an American-spec model?

Fairly certain its an American model. Unless by some fluke it isn't.

The US got a really watered down E36 M3. So with that said, I think the E46 is much better car (despite subframe issues).

I personally dislike the e46 appearance. I’m looking for a decent drivers car in this price range.

I mean they’re okay, I had a friend with one and we used to battle in C-Stock auto-cross for close times. My issue with them is they’re basically a factory-tuned 328i with LSD and a bored-out M52 (called the S52 in the M3) engine. If you can find one for a decent value, then they’re still fun as heck.

It has the shit engine...and just a much fatter body than the E30.
There is a reason the E30 is a classic loved by all enthusiasts. The E36 is just the old, fat sister of the hot one.
But since the E30 M3s are 20k and the E36 M3 are 6-7k, the choice is obvious. Just go for the fat one.

Word. I’m totally down with the E36 appearance wise!

The 328i was amazing, so you’ll love the M3 just as long as it’s a manual

They’re great fun to drive as long as you’re not expecting a rocketship. Certainly quick enough to be fun, excellent handling, solid without feeling at all overweight. Not too hard to work on either, and practical to live with. I say go for it if it hasn’t been hacked up or drifted.

I once looked at a 328i for 22 Thousand reais, which is not such a bad deal here in Brazil, and it seemed like a pretty decent car. Good amount of power, despite not being the M3, good driving dynamics and I really like its no frills looks when compared to its successors. Only reason I didn't bite were the maintenance costs...

10/10 would recommend.
Seriously though, people give the E36 shit all the time for being a “watered down” M car, but it’s still fast (0-60 in high 5s, low 6s depending on what transmission you have), pretty reliable (mine just rolled 170k), and they handle like they’re on rails. There’s plenty of upgrades for them as well to obtain near Euro version levels of power too.
I love mine, which I bought for $3,300 and had to put a bit of work into to get back to its former glory mechanically, and am still working on getting it cosmetically perfect.

Honestly if you live in America I can’t justify the huge difference in price over a 328is (so you still get a LSD) for such a small bump in power. But if you don’t live in America , go for it!!

The e36 has subframe issues as bad or worse than the e46’s. They have them in opposite locations though, in e36’s is the front mounts, in e46’s, its the rear mounts. The later facelifted e46’s seem to have a lower incidence of the subframe issues, and M3’s (both e36 and 46) lower still. Best guess in the community is that the stiffer subframe mounts in the M3’s helps prevent the metal from tearing.
